Day in the Life with Public Relations Student Society of America President Maria Martin
Students are so busy with school and work and just trying to keep it all together. Junior Public Relations Major Maria Martin walked me through her busy schedule as the President of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Martin is able to show us how she balances all of the responsibilities that come with being a full-time student here at Capital University and how PRSSA has made its mark on her life.
Stepping into the spring of her Junior year, Maria's day begins with an Emerging Media class taught by Steve Bruning, Ph. D. This class, one of the many she has taken at Capital, offers her insights into current media and PR trends, equipping her with the skills necessary for success in this field. What sets this class apart is the opportunity it provides for students to learn from industry professionals, a unique experience that Maria finds invaluable for her professional growth.
Transitioning seamlessly from her first class, Maria heads to the Blackmore Library to begin her Peer Career Advisor role in the Career Development Center. This role, which she has held for two years, has been instrumental in her personal and professional development. It has not only honed her leadership skills but also provided her with a platform to contribute to her campus community. This is just one of the many on-campus opportunities that have helped Maria evolve into the leader she is today.
After finishing her shift in her on-campus job, Maria heads off to the Programs and Campaigns Class with Lois Foreman-Wernet, Ph. D. Maria Describes this class as "one of my favorite classes I have ever taken so far at Capital." This class also allows students to analyze PR trends but with the added benefit of working in small groups to create campaigns for student organizations. The students taking this class get to learn and then apply their skills to a three-week-long social media plan to benefit a partnering student organization.
Continuing with Maria's day, she attends a video production class. Maria has been able to refine my media skills by taking this class. Maria shares that she has been able to shoot and edit films with tools that haven't been available until now.
In between this busy class schedule, Maria was able to work on fulfilling her duties as President of PRSSA and planning an end-of-year event for PRSSA. Public Relations Student Society of America is an organization that promotes the development of young PR professionals nationwide. Maria plans to use this event to reflect on and work to keep PRSSA's reputation at an all-time high.
Right after this, Maria was off to her last class of the day, Public Relations Client Based Immersion. This class is a partnership with Falhgren Mortine to support their client, Flying Horse Farms (FHF). Within this class, she has been able to work on a complete overhaul of FHF's social media.
After classes had been completed, Maria met with the Capital University chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon's Executive Board, of which she is also the President. In addition to her busy work schedule, school schedule, and being a student leader in PRSSA, she is also the President of her sorority.
Maria has found a lot of fulfillment in attending Capital and being so involved. She shared her love for the "tight-knit" community in Bexley and the opportunities that have been gotten from Capital. PRSSA has allowed Maria to gain so many opportunities on and off campus. One of these is her attendance at the annual leadership assembly in Seattle. Maria shared how she felt regarding Capital University, "Capital is no stranger to amazing educators, endless opportunities, and bright futures, and I'm so lucky I have gotten to be a part of the Cap Fam." Maria has countless opportunities on the horizon, and with only one semester left, she will have the chance to jump into the workforce earlier than some of her peers.
