The Convergent Media Center houses a major that is creative, interactive, and innovative: Film and Media Production (FMP). We sat down with Stephen Taylor, senior FMP major here at Capital to do a deep dive into his major, experiences at Capital, and hopes for the future.
Stephen’s journey with the CapFam began long before his FMP degree, when he was a music major here for two years. He then went on to play in the Marine Corps Band, to then return to Bexley as a comet and pursue his current FMP degree.
During his time in the Marine Corps Band, COVID-19 put everyone into lockdown. Since they were no longer able to play, the band was pushed to innovate and create music videos instead. It was here that Stephen’s passion for film and media production grew, pulling him back to Capital.
Last semester, he participated in an independent study where he worked alongside other students and collaborated with faculty and administration to create an introduction to the university for new hires. He conducted captivating interviews, edited lots of footage, and produced an effective video for our Human Resources department.
To prospective students who are considering the FMP track, Stephen explains that it is crucial to master the art of cooperation. He said, “Film is a very cooperative art form, and you can’t do it by yourself, so learning how to work with someone on something without trying to take it over is crucial.” Regarding Capital specifically, he assures potential students that Capital is a great place to make mistakes, learn from them, and feel comfortable doing so. Additionally, the faculty here are helpful, professional, and veterans of the field, no matter what career path you choose.
For students currently pursuing this path, Stephen drove the importance of seizing opportunities and making as much content as you can. “…If anybody asks you if you’re interested in working on a project the answer should always be yes. Take every opportunity you can get,” Stephen said.
Looking forward, Stephen’s dream job is working in the media department for Formula 1. Capital’s FMP program has equipped him with all the skills and knowledge to reach his goals, and we look forward to seeing what he does with his degree come this Spring!
