The Chimes Wins Top Award from Ohio News Media Association

The Chimes staff received the top award for Division B University Newspapers at the Ohio News Media Association during its Columbus convention April 4.

The Frank E. Deaner Award for Excellence in Collegiate Journalism is conferred upon a publication that has the most wins in 10 categories of competition.

In addition to overall excellence, the Chimes had first places in overall print design, website, headline writing and opinion writing.

The Chimes received second places for in-depth reporting and overall news coverage.

Charlie Rinehart, first year, took the headline honors for “Whose AI generated line is it anyway?”

Marvin Wurr, junior, received the opinion writing award for a variety of columns about cell phones, the Roman Empire, and pepperoni.

“It was really great to hear that our newspaper received a lot of recognition from the ONMA, including receiving the Frank E. Deaner award in the Division B category,” Wurr said.

Adrian Suppes, editor in chief who received a second place for in-depth reporting of university finances, said, “What this staff has been able to accomplish this year is amazing. Their hard work and dedication have been incredible and deserving of this great recognition. I am so honored to be a part of and lead this group.”

Samaree Perkins, managing editor who attended the conference, said, “ONMA was a great conference; it was exciting to interact with others in the news and journalism field. I am so proud of this year’s staff for all their accomplishments, including being name best collegiate newspaper (in division B)”

“The staff this year has taken their journalism training seriously,” Kelly Messinger, adviser, said. “They know the standards of good journalism and are practicing it. I am so pleased.”

Division B is universities of schools with less than 10,000 in enrollment. Some schools in this division include Otterbein University, Xavier University, University of Findlay, and Ohio Northern University.

The Ohio News Media Association was established in 1933 and is a state trade association that represents all of Ohio’s newspapers that qualify for periodicals class mail privileges. www.ohionews.org.

Frank E. Deaner was the executive director of the Ohio Newspaper Association for 20 years, retiring in 2011. Deaner was instrumental in establishing the collegiate competition.
